Amsterdam, 30 October 2010. Extremist demonstrators of the English Defence League (EDL) expressed support for Geert Wilders in Amsterdam today. They gathered under the watchful eye of a huge police force. 34 people were arrested.
A small group of extremist demonstrators of the English Defence League (EDL) has expressed their support to the Dutch anti-Islam right-wing politician Geert Wilders.
In remote industrial area in the Western Harbour of Amsterdam EDL supporters gathered under the watchful eye of a huge police force. Police reported that a total of 34 people were arrested. Eighteen of those arrested were arrested because they could not show identification.
Fourteen people were arrested for public violence and are still being detained. Five of the people arrested were British. At about 3.45pm, EDL supporters left the territory, with which the demonstration came to an end.
To prevent groups clashing, the police closed off the Isolatorweg including the subway. Supporters of the football club Ajax, anti-fascists and immigrants were thus kept away from the EDL supporters.
