Kosovo’s Turbulent year 2008 


On 17 February 2008 Kosovo declared itself independent from Serbia.

7 March 2008 marked the 10th anniversary of the death of Adem Jashari, one of the founders of the Kosovo Liberation Army

On 3 April 2008 the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague acquitted former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) commander and later prime-minister Ramush Haradinaj. He was found not guilty on war crimes and crimes against humanity, including, murder, rape, torture and persecution. 

On 11 May 2008 parliamentary elections were held in Serbia. Despite the declaration of independence, Serbs living in Kosovo’s northern city of Mitrovica voted.

Mitrovica continued to be the scene of a violent encounters between Serb protesters and UN police/KFOR troops.
